Elizabeth Hata Watanabe | Watanabe Makes a Solid Decision To Learn Flaky Pastry

Elizabeth Hata Watanabe puts all her energy into everything she does – her family, business ventures, volunteer and charity work. And now, her baking!

Food has always been a passion for Watanabe. But, when she began having children, she found herself baking cookies and making other delectable sweet treats. That peaked her interest and she began experimenting with different cookie and cake recipes. She received excellent feedback from friends all anxious to try her latest offerings and that led to her decision to pursue her latest interest - baking.

When Watanabe decides to do something, she really commits. After all, why waste the energy if you’re not going to give your all? In conversations with her friend and Chef Ernesto Limcaco, from her latest food establishment, Burgers and Things in Pauoa Valley, she decided to embark on a new adventure.

Chef Ernesto told her about the San Francisco Baking Institute. Consequently, in July, she and her family will head to San Francisco. She’ll spend two months at the institute, which is touted as a world-renowned leader in Artisan bread and pastry education.

Watanabe will be there to strengthen her skills as a pastry chef. The San Francisco Baking Institute, or SFBI, as it’s called, is also the only school in the United States dedicated to Artisan baking.

The Institute features the latest baking equipment and technology and emphasizes a mixture of hands-on learning and “real world” experience. Now that’s a recipe for success! And just imagine what Watanabe will whip up for friends, family and customers (at Burgers and Things), after spending two months at the SFBI? We’re all drooling with anticipation to taste her success!

Elizabeth Hata Watanabe | The Road Back…Long, Difficult, but Well Worth it, With Help from the Kindness of Strangers!

At the beginning of a lush Valley, there’s an eatery on Pauoa Road that is tucked into an unassuming building. In fact, you might miss it, if you didn’t know where you were going. Burgers and Things has no big, flashy sign boasting the delicious treats that are concocted from within. But, as you get closer, the aroma of a braised, not grilled, burger will lead you right to the front door. Once inside, three waitresses sporting their “Burger Hero” T-shirts buzz around, attending to a few late-lunch customers. One of those waitresses is 41-year-old Kathleen Waikiki, a transplant from Maui. She greets everyone with a smile. And, after hearing her story, you might wonder HOW she manages to smile at all! She does so, because she now has hope – hope for a future not marred by drugs, or relationships with men measured by the number of bruises on her lean body. “I thought if they didn’t hit me, it wasn’t okay.” She expected to be hit! “ Growing up, I saw my parents fight a lo...

Elizabeth Hata Watanabe | Cookies Anyone? - 2017

Named Mother of the Year in 2008 by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s HawaiiMoms.com website, Elizabeth Hata Watanabe gets inspiration for her yummy homemade cookies from her children. She has three – two boys, ages 12 and 8 and a 6-year-old daughter. But, let’s face it, you don’t have to be a kid to be tempted by the aroma of a freshly baked cookie wafting through the air. In her online bakery, hauteconfectioneryboutique.com , Watanabe experiments with all kinds of flavors and ingredients. There’s a favorite, though - the “Campfire,” which she describes as a “huge chocolate chip cookie on the outside,” but in the center, there’s a s’more-like filling, including marshmallow, graham and chocolate chunks. But, there other tempting treats on the menu, including “Mochi Crunchies,” a savory and sweet treat fashioned from whipped butter and the popular Japanese snack kakimochi; or the chewy Coconut Shortbread; Hapa brownies are dark chocolate baked over a shortbread crust,...

Hey students? Need some incentive to stick to your studies? How about burgers? Or more precisely, a burger from Burgers and Things, located at 1991 Pauoa Road. Those in Pauoa Valley know where to go for a great tasting burger, with a flair. But, Burgers and Things’ co-owners Chef Ernesto Limcaco and Elizabeth Hata Watanabe have cooked up a reward for students (in all grades up through high school) who do well in their studies. Just show your report card with straight A’s to Watanabe or another member of the Burgers and Things team, and you’ll get a free burger.    “ Education is so important. It’s the road to success,” Watanabe, the mother of three school-aged children, says. “So, whenever a student has straight A’s, we encourage them and motivate them with a free burger.” The program also serves as an incentive for students of all ages to study hard and do well in school. Introducing good study habits early on, will carry students t...
